M: What comes to your mind when you talk about skin color?

V: black, dark, racist, white, light, vitiligo, diversity, culture and environment. Can you add anything?

M: I also thought about age, skin condition and social media.

V: Have you ever had problems or got into trouble because of your skin color?

M: No, I have never had problems with my skin color. I went to an almost completely white elementary school, high school and Mbo school. Willem de Koning is my first school with so many different skin colors together. I love having all these different people around me and learn from them. Have you ever had problems with your skin color?

V: No, I have never had any problems I live in a not too big village and respect everyone around me and that gives me a lot of respect in return.

M: I think that if you realize that the world is not about you, but that we all live here together, you can build mutual respect. And I'm really trying to pursue this. But sometimes I notice that when I'm on the train I have a wider smile to someone with a tinted appearance than a blank appearance. I do this to make this person feel like they belong here, but of course I known that is just nonsense. The color of our skin has nothing to do with race it’s a byproduct of adaptation. Do you have that also sometimes?

V: Yes, I understand you but for me it doesn’t matter whether the person is fair, medium or dark skinned. For me the skin health matters. Behave differently towards people because of their color is not necessary but I understand what you mean you want to give everybody a nice feeling.

M: Values are hard to change; so, how can we produce behavior change without asking people to change their values?

V: I think when you understand that the color of the skin is not correlated to anything else, it’s easier to realize that the world does not revolve around you. It’s not that white people are not superior, no one else is.

M: Yes, I think you’re right in that the color of our skin says a lot about our minds.

V: Yes, because you can already see this in our first thoughts because the first thing, I describe is black, dark and racist, but why did I not start with white and light and what exactly do you mean with social media?

M: I thought about social media because we have been at home for a while now and we want to stay in touch with the world. So, for example, I use a lot of WhatsApp to communicate with my friends and family and to give some strength to my story I often use emoticons. I often use the emoticons with a skin color and had to remember that I really consciously look at which color I choose.

V: Ow yes indeed now that you say it, I always unconsciously look at whether I can find an emoticon with the same skin color as mine. I think more people are consciously doing this.

M: Yes, I think that these days we are busy with our skin color in the real but also in the virtual world. We grow up with the internet these days and often have to make choices about our skin color.

V: That would be an interesting topic!
